What is Tu Bishvat?
Tu Bishvat, the 15th of the Hebrew month of Shevat, is the “New Year of the Trees” — the day on which, according to Jewish tradition, a new year begins for the trees. In the Land of Israel it is the time when the first almond trees blossom, announcing the coming of spring.
The holiday is celebrated by eating the fruits for which the Land of Israel is praised — especially the Seven Species: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates — by holding a festive Tu Bishvat Seder, and by planting trees.
